K RESIDENCE
Total Floor Area: 176.44 sqm
First floor: 105.53
sqm Second floor: 70.91 sqmThe K Residence involved the design of a house for two sisters and a dog named Cookie. The concept was a reinterpretation of the Japanese theme of the Daikokubashira. At the center of this house is a concrete core envisioned as massive column of 3.5 x 3.5 meters extending two floors with a void space in the middle. This column servers both as the spatial and structural anchor for this house. The structure was envisioned as a ruin and there are various square shapes cut into it to provide for space, light and energy flowing into and out of the center. This space is surrounded on three sides by the major habitable rooms, although the two bedrooms have complete privacy. This core space and Japanese room have a strong relationship and connection to the garden space. The deck is like an extension to both rooms. This garden continues to an adjoining garden that is the clientÕs parentÕs property. The quality and character of natural daylight was considered in each interior space examples of top, side and bottom lighting are all combined in this house. An example can be seen in the bathroom and sisters bedroom photos. The roof deck, which is primarily for cookie, is rather extensive and it can also be used for afternoon and evening parties. However, it is most likely that the garden area and first floor deck will also serve this purpose. An interesting feature is a glass sculpture done by the artist Mica Okuno that is framed by the concrete core.
